Best Advice for Preparing your Outdoor Furniture for Winter

While it’s difficult to admit, the weather has been changing and it’s time to start thinking about storing your outdoor furniture for the winter. Before you let your frustration with mother nature get the best of you, take note of these great tips for winterizing your furniture. Come next spring, you will be thanking yourself.

  • Clean it Up!!

There’s no use in properly storing your furniture for an entire season without first cleaning it. You probably invested a good sum of money in your outdoor space, so take note and spend the time to clean the furniture. At best, it’ll be virtually impossible to clean come spring. At worst, it will be covered in mold and rendered unusable, costing you a lot of money and frustration.

Before getting ready to pack up your outdoor furniture, give it a good scrub down. Usually, a solution of water and dish soap will do the trick and is generally safe on materials such as wicker, mesh, plastic, and wrought iron. That being said, always do a spot test in an inconspicuous area if you aren’t sure.

If you’re tackling wood pieces, it’s best to pick up a specially formulated cleanser that will leave your pieces spotless and condition the wood at the same time. Helpful hint: a toothbrush is a great tool for getting into small crevices that may otherwise have been overlooked.

  • Give it a Rub Down!

Depending on the type of outdoor furniture you have, you will want to add a layer of protection to help keep the integrity of the material. It’s not absolutely necessary, but doesn’t hurt and you will be happy with the results come spring.

For recycled plastic furniture, such as Polywood or Seaside Casual, because it’s made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic, it is extremely durable and weather resistant. The most you will probably need to do is wipe it down with a mild dish soap and warm water. Use a clean cloth or soft bristled brush to tackle tough dirt and let air dry. Even though this material can hold up to harsh weather conditions, if you are forced to leave in elements all winter, it makes sense to cover it up for less clean up when the weather warms up.

If you see signs of mildew or mold, clean with a strong solution of bleach in soapy water. Otherwise, before storage, clean with a damp not wet cloth. If any piece gets saturated, bring it inside to dry and be careful not to bend, fold or flex any part of it while its wet. For that added layer of protection, paste wax works the best for wicker or rattan furniture.

If you have cast-aluminum or wrought-iron furniture, there are different trains of thought when preparing for winter. Wrought-iron pieces should not be left out, as it can rust easily. Since it tend to be a heavy material, it’s recommended to purchase quality covers that encompass all aspects of the furniture. If rust does appear, sand down any troubled areas and apply a silicone sealant.

Cast aluminum furniture is one of the most durable and weather resistant pieces of patio furniture that you can buy. Cast aluminum is basically rust proof so you don’t need to worry too much about moisture. There are plenty of covers that are available that fit all sorts of different shapes and sizes of patio furniture. Another added benefit of cast aluminum is that it’s super lightweight. If you’re concerned about a big windstorm or crazy snow conditions, it should be easy to move this furniture into a place away from the elements.

  • Go ahead, cover it!

Tagalys Web Banner-Outdoor CoversEven if you’re planning on storing your outdoor furniture in a shed or garage, you need to cover everything up to protect it from dust, moisture, and all those other things that are best avoided. If you’re leaving everything outside, you absolutely need to ensure that the covers you choose are weather resistant and are able to withstand the elements. We have a great selection of outdoor covers for any size furniture, to include fire pits/tables.

Don’t forget your furniture cushions need love too. They should be wiped down with a damp cloth and let air dry before storing for the winter. If you find yourself needing replacement cushions, we have a great selection of those as well and can offer pretty much any size for any brand of furniture.

The key component in prolonging your outdoor patio furniture is yearly maintenance. It’s time well spent when the next season rolls around. Outdoor decor is an investment in your home, and as such you will want to protect yourself in the long term.

1. Durability – the reason the price tag is so high at a specialty store, such as All Backyard Fun, is because the furniture will last you for so many years that you’ll be buying a new sectional just because your current one is out of style!

2. Cushions – When you fish out the big bucks you’re also paying for comfort. Brand name furniture, sold at specialty stores, often offers plush yet firm cushions. The cushions are usually about 6”. If you buy from a box retailer, the cushions will usually be about 3”. At All Backyard Fun all of our cushions are made by Sunbrella and are UV & Mold Resistant. They can be power washed and with low maintenance will hold up beautifully for multiple seasons.

3. Warranty – Many brand name companies have over 10 years of warranty! If a company offers a long warranty policy, that means they believe in the quality of their product. Most box retailers offer products seasonally and leave you high and dry with a 1 year warranty and strict specifications.

4. Investing in Your Life – It may seem more cost effective to buy the cheap set today, but it won’t be a financially smart move in a year after you’ve spent hundreds on replacement costs, and will have to eventually buy a brand new set anyways.

Should You Cover Your Furniture

Should You Cover Your Patio Furniture?

Do you park your car in the garage? Would you park your car in a garage if you had the means? If you’re the type of person who likes to be better safe than sorry, or frequently hear yourself saying “nip it in the bud” (yes that’s the real expression), then I’d say you’re a patio furniture cover type of person. Like a car, I can bet you’ve spent hundreds or thousands on your patio furniture. When you spend a high amount of money on an item, you want said item to last; you expect it to last! If we lived in a perfect world, spending a thousand dollars on a wicker sofa would mean it would last you forever without any upkeep. But, we don’t live in a perfect world (*sigh*). You spend thousands upon thousands of dollars on a car, and even after all that money spent you still have to put more money into your vehicle to make sure it stays up and running. The same is true when it comes to outdoor furniture.  You have to take care of it. The good news is, it’s a lot cheaper to take care of than a car! Cover your club chairs or lounger when the winter rolls around, clean your fabric every so often, and treat it like you would the day you bought it. For those of you who like to live life on the wild side you can let Mother Nature take her course, and have your outdoor furniture fend for itself!

What Type of Furniture is Best For Your Climate

What Type of Outdoor Patio Furniture is Best for Your Climate?

As we enter the fall season, a common concern for homeowners is outdoor patio furniture that can sustains in various year round climates.

In Front Range Colorado, high winds coming off the mountains is common for local homeowners. But in the U.S. and overseas, All Backyard Fun often has customers asking questions like, “I live in a pretty windy area, is this chair going to blow away?” or “I live on the east coast and the summers are brutally humid, how will this material hold up in such a climate?” It’s true, different types of outdoor furniture will hold up in certain climates better than others. Here’s the best type of furniture to buy based on your climate.

HOT AND HUMID?

If you live in a hot and humid area, a great option to go with is cast aluminum patio furniture. This type of material is rust proof which won’t let the humidity take a toll, leaving you with years and years of use. In addition, cast aluminum furniture is best known for its elaborate and intricate styles, so you can have a quite an eloquent design. One of our favorite cast aluminum products is the Sonata High Back Dining Chair from Windward. The Sonata features a sophisticated rolled arm design, and has extra padding for extreme comfort!

WHERE THE WIND BLOWS?

If you live in a windy area, and you’re worried about your patio furniture blowing away, fear not! A good option for windy city dwellers is wrought iron furniture. This material is the heaviest type of patio furniture, so your wrought iron club chair will still be on your patio after the harsh spring summer, and winter storms. Wrought Iron makes for a very heavy and sturdy type of furniture, creating a durable and strong piece of furniture. The only caveat when choosing wrought iron furniture is you may need two people to move around the furniture. It’s heavy, which is why it won’t blow away in a serious storm. If you’re looking for a club chair to stand up against a storm while maintain a classy look take a look at the Venetia Club Chair by Paragon Casual. Its durable, has a beautiful design, and the deep seating allows for great relaxation!

CHILLING BY THE POOL?

Don’t think we forgot about you pool lovers! If you like to relax pool side, a great furniture option is sling aluminum. With sling aluminum, you get all the comfort and cushion of a normal fabric, but the sling aluminum dry’s much faster. When you get out of the pool and sit on a sling aluminum piece of furniture, you won’t have to worry about waiting hours for it to dry. It’s rust proof too! One of our popular items in this category is the Marine Grade Polymer High Back Swivel Rocker. It is padded for some serious comfort after swimming laps in the pool.

CLASSIC WICKER

If none of these options fit your needs, there is always the choice to go with a wood or wicker furniture set. Wicker and wood are appealing for its warm and timeless styles. What’s great about wood or wicker, is it will hold up nicely in any and all climates.  Wicker is always a classic choice that offers a beautiful modern look when it comes to outdoor furniture.

Though, if you’re in very dry areas like Arizona, wood furniture will require a bit more maintenance. Wood is very well known for its’ longevity and durability – just look at your grandma’s picnic table she’s probably had around since you were a baby! One of our favorite wicker collections is the Terrace Curved Sectional. It’s a fun, affordable design that differs from your basic L-sectional set.
